Is God really good all the time?​

A man asked me some days back, “Do you go to church?” I said, yes, confidently. Then he asked, “So you are one of those Jesus people?” and I said, “yes” again confidently. He asked again, “Is your God good all the time or sometimes?  I paused. After a few seconds, I finally said, “of course He is good all the time.” (Not really confidently this time)

In that little second, I thought about the popular saying we all chorus in church or at any Christian gathering, “God is good, and we respond, “all the time” without thinking about it. This is a saying we met in church and grew up saying. Remembering that, I was able to answer that man.

But, why did I pause? Why didn’t I reply confidently this time?

I had to think about that question. Because sometimes life just doesn’t seem so good, bad things happen, various terminal sicknesses, accidents, deaths here and there and that makes me wonder, Is God really good all the time? Am I sure of that? Can I trust that God is good all the time?

We all go through hard times and our feelings at that point can make us ask questions like, Is God being good to me right now? Am I sure God is working for my good right now even though what I see and feel says otherwise? Do we have the true convictions in our hearts that even when things seem to be going wrong and not good, our God is still good?

In Lysa Terkeurst latest book – “Uninvited” (I strongly recommend👍) she said, “The beliefs we hold should hold us up even when life seems like it’s falling apart.” Are your beliefs and truth about God good and strong enough to hold you up even when life and circumstances say otherwise? Do you trust in his word that says, “In all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” Romans 8:28 (NIV)?

Note; it says “Those who love him.” Do you love God, do you obey his commandment and his word, do you go on sinning and heaping your sins to the limit? The Bible says, “should we keep on sinning so that God can show us more and more of his wonderful grace?” Romans 6:1 (NLT). First, we can not continue in our evil and sinful ways and wonder why is God not good to me? We can not continue to proclaim we love him with our lips and entirely neglect his commandments and words. The Bible tells us that those who completely love God, obey his words truly – 1 John 3:1 (NLT). So you can’t keep living a life that contradicts God’s word and question why bad things keep happening or why it seems like God isn’t good all the time. You keep committing sins without any thoughts of repentance. So, first, do the right thing and trust that God will definitely work for your good at all times.

Second, establish your beliefs on the truth and not your feelings. Lysa Terkeurst said it best again, “Our feelings are fragile and can become broken boards easily… What stays solid and unchanging is the TRUTH. The truth we know about God stays stable through and through. We should stop assessing God’s immense goodness by how our life feels or felt at a given time.”  We should trust that God uses even our deepest hurts right now for a greater good someday.

We often let our feelings creep in when something unexpected happens, and suddenly we begin to doubt God’s goodness. Suddenly, God becomes a stranger to us, and we act like we know nothing about him. What happened to the relationship? What happened to the trust we ought to have in God?  How about the fact that you woke up this morning, you were able to move your body out of bed, you got another chance and the gift of life? That alone shows God immense goodness to us and promises us that God isn’t done with us yet, and he is not tired of being good to us. So, why are you tired?  Why are you doubting God? Why are you giving authority to your fleshly and fragile feelings?  Why do you doubt in the dark what God said in the light? Don’t be spiritually blind, ask for the eyes to see beyond any ugly situation and prevent your feelings from causing you to doubt God.

Sometimes, a hard and bad situation could be God’s test of your faith in him and failing that test by letting our feelings take control will be a total letdown. God allows us to go through difficult times in order to grow. We don’t grow by remaining in our comfort zone. There won’t be testimonies without trials and test. We should be like Job. He suffered a lot of tragedy, lost his family, possession, business, and good health in one day. But, he held on to the truth about God and trusted God in the midst of all that. Job said, “I have not departed from the commands of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my daily bread (Job 23:12 NIV). And we all know how Job’s story eventually turned out to be. God blessed his latter days more than his beginnings.

We should be not conditional and situational Christians, who only trust that God is good when things are good and when things are not so good, we doubt his goodness and blame him. Just as Rick Warren said, “We should focus on who God is – his unchanging nature and character. God is good; he loves us, he is with us; he knows what we are going through; he cares, and he has a good plan for our lives.” Learn to trust the truth and not your feelings. Trust the spirit and not your flesh.

That man finally said to me, “Of course, your God is good all the time, Esther. Never let anything and anyone change your faith and truth about God.” And all I did was smile… Another great lesson learned. Praise be to God, Hallelujah!

Be confident and assured of your faith and trust the truth that;

OUR GOD IS GOOD ALL THE TIME and ALL THE TIME OUR GOD IS GOOD

It shouldn’t be just a regular saying we say because all Christain say it or we grew up saying it. Examine yourself and ground that
truth in your life that “God is good, he is good to me (you), and he is good at being God” – Lysa Terkeurst. Be sure of it and never let anyone tell you or anything make you feel otherwise.

 

 

Many scriptures tell us about God’s goodness;

Psalm 145:9 – The LORD is good to all, And His mercies are over all His works.

Psalm 86: 5 – For You, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive, And abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.

1 Chronicles 16:34 – O give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting.

James 1:17 – Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.

Deuteronomy 8:7 – “For the LORD your God is bringing you into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and springs, flowing forth in valleys and hills;

2 Samuel 7:28 – “Now, O Lord GOD, You are God, and Your words are truth, and You have promised this good thing to Your servant.

Nahum 1: 7 – The LORD is good, A stronghold in the day of trouble, And He knows those who take refuge in Him.

And so much more, because the whole bible talks about his goodness and love for us in one way or another.

One of my favorite Bible verse that reminds me of God’s goodness and love is our popular love verse, John 3:16 – “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” This bible verse comforts me and reminds me that, never should I doubt a God who willingly gave his son for my sake. If he could do that for a sinner like me, then I can definitely trust that his plans for my life are always good. My God is good all time not sometimes.
