What does it mean to be the Light of the World?

light of the world

Jesus calls us the Light of the World (Matthew 5:14) but recently I came to know that I didn’t quite understand what that meant but thank God for His wisdom.

A light’s function is the make things clear. A light in form of a lamp, bulb, candle or lantern is lit to extinguish darkness, brighten a room and make things visible and clear.
I also ponder on how Psalm 119:105 says ”Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”

This means that the Word of God makes our path visible/clear.
Thus as children of God who are called to be light of the world, we are to make things visible. What things? The truth vs. the lies. Our lives are to shine and make the truth visible. We are to proclaim the gospel with our mouths and lives. We are to make the grace of God visible with mouths and lives.

Unfortunately, we who are called to be light are dimming our light.

Jesus said, do people light a lamp and hid it under a bowl, rather it will be put on it stand to give light to everyone in the house, in the same way, let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven. (Matthew 5:15-16).

But many of us have hidden our light. We who are called to speak the truth, share the gospel, share our testimony are blending in with the world. Rather than extinguishing the darkness where we are, we are contributing to it. We are leaving people in darkness. We have light in us, yet we conceal it. Why? Because we don’t want to stand out? But we’ve been called to stand out. Because we don’t want to be hated by others? Yes, it is true that people love the darkness and would rather remain in it but we are called to be light anyways and we are to expect hatred and persecutions from the world.

There’s also another category of Christians who are shining their light but their light is flickering. Rather than shining fully and calling a spade a spade. They flicker. A little truth and a little lie. One leg in and one leg out. Today we are on fire for God on our social media pages and in our lives, tomorrow, we are posting something else that doesn’t align with God. This type of flickering light is even more dangerous. We are confusing people all the more. Unknown to us, people are watching all we do. And if they see that it’s okay for a “Christian” to have their light on today and tomorrow have it off, they will also live exactly like that. Unknowingly we are becoming stumbling blocks rather than stepping stone. We are blinding and confusing people rather than illuminating and clearing their paths.

This has been so convicting to me personally. Because believe it or not, you have light in you because you are born of God. (God is light and in him, there is no darkness at all _1 John 1:5). The light in you is going nowhere.

But the question is, what is the condition and state of your light? Are you constantly shining? Flickering? Or hidden/dimmed?

Honestly answer the question to yourself. I pray that God Almighty will grant us all the grace and strength to shine always regardless of where we are. We will not compromise or cower under pressure. We will always shine our lights, all to the glory of God in Jesus name. Amen.

God Bless
