I asked myself, “Is there anything in this world that can get me satisfied without wanting more?” I pondered over it but I couldn’t reach a convincing answer. My mind was only filled up with answers like – money, love, food, fame, positions, etc., and I came to realize that one never gets satisfied with them.
There is always need for more.
I asked myself again, ” if I can’t get satisfied with these answers I have got going through my mind (money, love, food, fame, etc), can they at least give me lasting happiness and peace of mind?” I couldn’t help myself to get a reasonable answer.
Are you going through the questions yourself, or are you just reading through? Take a few seconds to think about it.
If you have decided to let the question slide like I did, then you will agree with me that all these things we feel or believe in to give us satisfaction are only WANTS and not our NEEDS. They are worldly gains that we just want to lay our hands on for worldly reasons. Most times, we want them badly that we go through diverse means to get them. I am not saying you should not dream big, gain wealth, stay healthy, get fame, etc. I am only emphasizing that these things we seem to be so much after, have no eternal guarantee for us. They are only for the moments.
“Just when you think you have gotten all that there is to be gotten, you then realize there are still more”.
In these world of ours, change is constant in everything. What you think is the best today, is outdated tomorrow. Who you think is being praised today, is nowhere to be found tomorrow.
The things we thought we had to have yesterday may not even interest us the next day – Joyce Meyer.
The question then is- What do we really NEED?
We are too busy attending to our flesh and filling up our bellies with selfish desires. We get so fatty and unsatisfied with worldly gains that we seem to be forgetting that we have a SOUL to tend to. God understands His creatures (us), and He is very much familiar with our NEEDS.
Please note that there are specifically only three Basic need of a man:
These three basic fleshy needs are what God seems to be concerned of and because He is aware that they are essential to us, He has been ever faithful in providing them to us on a daily basis. The fact that you wake up in the morning to go out and work, then come back in the evening to relax for the next day (like we call it Daily activities) is all God. Your breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all due to God’s grace. It has never been by our own power to provide our NEEDS, it has been GOD and can only be GOD.
God knowing fully well that our human nature will always worry and run after these things, said to us in Matthew 6:25
“Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body more than raiment”.
Verse 32 went further saying
” For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; For your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things”.
If I am permitted to interpret these scriptures in a layman language, I would say that it clearly means – Do not be overly concerned about filling up yourself (flesh) and neglecting your soul. Tend to your soul and trust God to take care of your needs.
Have you taken your time to think, that after all these things everyone seems to be running after, What Next?
“What shall it then profit a man who succeeds in getting himself/herself fully filled but loses fulfillment?”
Whenever we find ourselves too busy filling up our bellies with earthly gains and getting fatty in it, we lose ourselves, then forget God. No little wonder when we ask God for our WANTS, He ignores it and rather respond to our NEEDS.
God knew that the children of Israel will go against Him once He gets them to the promised land because they will only be concerned about filling up their bellies. So, He (God) instructed Moses to give them a song as a witness for Him(God) against the children of Israel.
“For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey, and they shall have eaten and filled themselves and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant” – Deuteronomy 31: 20 KJV.
Are you too busy getting fully filled?….Are you provoking God?….What gods are you turning to?….Are you breaking your eternal covenant with God?…..Do not lose your soul.
There is a man I got fond of in the Bible, his name is Agur. I found him in the book of Proverbs 30, where he was delivering his prophetic revelation. I got caught up in verse 8 and 9a, where Agur prayed like this –
“Remove far from me vanity and lies: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me. Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the Lord?”.
Agur here was making a conscious effort of not losing his soul for the things of the flesh….It is an effort every believer must make and help others in making.
We were taught that when calculating BMI (Body Mass Index), we should divide the individual weight (In kg) by the height (In m)squared. The average/normal BMI for adults is 24.99kg/m squared, any BMI less than 18.50kg/m squared for an adult is classified as being underweight and anything above 25kg/m squared for an adult is either overweight or obese. Having a regular checkup on our BMI is helpful and healthy.
I strongly feel that we need to start calculating something I call our BSI (Body Soul Index) by dividing what we are filling up our body with by what we are filling up our soul with. It has to be balanced. This will keep us In check and of course, having a regular checkup on our BSI will help us from straying.
Take note that when you are getting fully filled outside God, it means no fulfillment, for inside God lies – Fulfillment, Peace of Mind, Eternal Happiness, Perfect Satisfaction, etc.
Remember, Matthew 6:33 (KJV), which says –
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”
