Let’s do a quick Bible study on Luke 6: 46 – 49. Who’s down?
Come back here, don’t run away.
It’s just four verses. Stick around.
Let’s start.
vs. 46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?
How many of us are guilty of this? I am.
Okay, family, I need y’all to be honest with yourselves. No one can see you right now. I just need you to suppress that pride for a while and be honest with yourself. I’ll ask again. “Have you ever called Jesus,”Lord”, yet you do not do the things He said you should do?”
If you raised your hand, then keep reading. This is for you and me.
Let’s go to the next verse.
Vs. 47. “I will show you what someone is like who COMES to me, HEARS my words, and ACTS on them.”
Jesus is saying, you call me Lord but do not do what I say. Now, let me show/explain to you how someone who COMES to me (The Word), HEARS my word and ACTS on my Word, looks like.
Now let’s go to the next verse and see what this person is like.
VS 48. “He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built.
How many of us want to be like this person?
I need you to raise your hands for this one too. Because there is something that happens when you affirm that you want something. You get it. For the Bible says, Ask and it shall be given AND you have not because you ask not.
Again, you are not in the church building, don’t be shy, suppress pride and raise your hand wherever you are reading this. People around you may think you are crazy but raise your hand still.
Well done.
Now, let’s read the final verse,
vs 49. “But the one who hears and does NOT act is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The river crashed against it, and immediately it collapsed. And the destruction of that house was great.”
I don’t think I need to ask, I am sure no-one wants to be this person.
But the sad reality is many of us are this person.
This isn’t because we are not Christians. We are Christians, we go to church, listen to God’s word, read our Bible, Christian books and blogs, listen to podcasts, etc. We are always listening.
We have COME to the WORD
We have HEARD the WORD
BUT
We are NOT ACTING on the WORD.
Remember the first verse (46), “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say?” It is in the DOING that we are perfected. Did you notice the difference between the man building on rocks and that building on the ground?
Go back and read vs. 49.
You are right.
The one building on the ground was NOT ACTING on the WORD. He did come to the word and he heard it but he just didn’t act on it.
Who would think that just not doing one of the three could cause such destruction?
“I go to church, I read my bible, I talk about it, but do I really have to act on it?”
Yes, you do.
It’s not about the knowledge but knowledge put into action.
So, I guess you and I now know what to do.
We simply need to ACT.
How do I act you may ask?
It’s simple.
Simply take the WORD you’ve heard and apply it into your DAILY REAL LIFE.
Let’s take the greatest commandment, LOVE for example.
We’ve heard and read about agape love countless times. So, let’s try applying it in our lives.
You get to work and your boss or co-worker annoys you. Instead of retaliating, you chose to act on the word you’ve heard/read and responded with love.
Oh family, that right there is ONE ROCKY FOUNDATION laid in Christ.
And you keep laying more and more when you do those simple acts of what the WORD says.
To you and others, you may look stupid and foolish and it may be easier to insult your co-worker, spouse, or stranger and it may seem like no foundation is being laid.
But darling, when the flood of life and the river of life come crashing against you, you will know that surely you have been building a solid rock foundation because you will remain standing. And vice-versa.
So, I beseech ye brethren (hahaha)
Honestly, it’s time we start building and acting not just listening, hearing and talking about our faith but WORKING and ACTING it out.
Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. __ James 1:22 (NIV)
Let’s be Christians who call Him, “Lord, Lord” and DO what He says.
I pray that we will continue to come to the word, hear the word and most importantly act on the word as we lay down our foundation in Christ Jesus. Amen.
God bless. Thanks for reading.
You are Eternally Loved.
