This is literally my favorite topic to talk about from God’s word. LOVE! It is so wide and deep.
Without understanding God’s love we can’t fully come into the knowledge and understanding of his Word. We should read and study the Bible with a lens of God’s love.
And without understanding and living in love, we can’t effectively share the truth with others.
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul was responding to the Corinthians letter about spiritual gifts and told them to eagerly desire the greater gifts and he concludes by saying (vs 31b), “However, let me tell you something else that is better than any of the gifts.” And that is LOVE.
He went on to dedicate a whole chapter (13) to talk about love.
He said if he had all the gifts without love, he is bankrupt and useless. The same applies to us. “All the special gifts and powers from God will someday come to an end but love goes on forever” (1 Corinthians 13:8).
For God is love. And he has no end.
Understanding God’s Love enables us to live in the love that he has deposited into our hearts as his children
And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.
2 Timothy 1:7
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
So our prayer shouldn’t be God give me your love but help me to grow and abound in your love that it may overflow through me. Love comes with the Christian package.
But as a new believer, God’s love can be overwhelming and too-good-to-be-true. But when we take time to know him through the studying of his word, we begin to understand a glimpse (because his love surpasses all knowledge – Ephesians 3:19) of his love through the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
In return, this love does something to our heart and spirit, it begins to activate the God kind of love (agape) that has been given to us by the Holy Spirit because we are his children and we are called to be Christlike.
So, understanding God’s love helps us to embrace his word, the promises, his commands and even the chastise and rebukes because we understand that they are out of love.
Likewise, his commands are not burdensome but are loving instructions from a father to a child.
Without understanding, embracing and living in God’s love, obedience to his commands (love God and love others) becomes impossible.
Love aids godliness and demolishes ungodliness. Love aids obedience. Love aids rejoicing in sufferings and persecutions. Love aids sharing the truth with others, etc., AND Love demolishes pride, selfishness and all sinful/evil ways.
But we need to wake up daily and choose love because our flesh is still in battle will our spirit and doesn’t wanna love but hate.
As Christians, love is our trademark.
Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples (John 13:35).
Grow daily in your understanding of God’s love.
Meditate on it and be guided by it.
You are Eternally Loved.
