Know your Triggers

The key to solving a problem is admitting that there is a problem and being determined to solve it.

The same goes for sin. If you can figure out what causes you to sin you can better overcome it. The only way to stop sin from being your master is being determined to stop being a slave to sin and running to Jesus.

I’ll share my personal story. This is a story that’s also in my testimony. Check it out if you haven’t. However, I’ll give you a briefing on it.

I used to be addicted to pornography and masturbation for about 5 years. I was fine with it. I was comfortable in sin and didn’t see any need to stop it. Of course, until God grabbed my heart and drew me unto Himself in 2016. Slowly, I began to see the wrong in my actions. The sin which was comfortable slowly became uncomfortable. The sin that gave me full pleasure started yielding partial to no pleasure. The sin that started with an earnest yearn and desire began to end in shame and regret, “Why did I do it?” I felt so terrible.

The Lord began to show me my sinful lifestyle and I wanted an out desperately.
So I began to pay attention to my triggers. I knew that the fight was spiritual but I also understood that the fight might start with a physical trigger. “What triggers me to go into my room, look for pornography on the internet and makes me masturbate? What is my trigger?”
Well, I found the trigger (s). Well, I had more than one triggers such as idleness but the worst one was watching movies with sex scenes in them.

When the scene comes on, the lust and carnal mind in me begins to imagine all sort and travel wild and of course, the devil tells me, “Why stop there when you can have more?” So the thoughts progress into actions. And after the action and sin came shame and regret. It was a very vicious cycle.

So I made a decision that if I have prior knowledge that there’s a sex scene in the movie (thank goodness some movies lets you know that before you start watching), I will refrain from watching it. However, if I didn’t know, then once it comes up, I will stop watching the movie. Of course, it’s was a hard and tough decision but like I mentioned earlier you have to be intentional and determined. It’s about how bad you want to be free from that sin and please God.

Coupled with prayers, fasting and asking God for help I was able to cut free from that addiction. Resist the devil and he will flee from you (James 4:7)

Now, I told you it can be hard but with the help of the Holy Spirit we are conquerors. Let me give you an example. Game of Thrones is a very popular movie with a great storyline, however, there’s a lot of nudity and sex scene in it. I discovered and started watching this movie in the very last season that just ended. I found it very interesting. So I decided to start watching it all the way from season 1.
Now GOT is an example of a movie that tells you there’s nudity, sex scene, etc in the movie. But of course, I ignored it. I thought, “I can handle it now, I am free from that addiction and temptation. It’s been a long time and I haven’t backslid” BUT I was so wrong.

Therefore let the one who thinks he stands firm [immune to temptation, being overconfident and self-righteous], take care that he does not fall [into sin and condemnation].

1 Corinthians 10:12 AMP.

Suddenly and slowly those thoughts and carnal feelings started creeping up again. I thought, “OMG what is going on/ This cannot be happening.” The Holy Spirit said, “Well, you opened the door. Sin was quietly crouching at your door waiting for you open that door again and you opened it out of pride.”

My oh, my.  I thought, “Not again. I have been doing so good on this other side of the door with the Lord. I don’t wanna go back there. It was terrible back there.” The fight was hard my friends and that situation really proved to me that we really ain’t wrestling against flesh and blood but against powers, principalities and spiritual wickedness in high places.

It was hard but I had to make a choice. Go back to my vomit or continue to see and taste the goodness of the Lord. Well, the choice was obvious for me because I have tasted and seen the goodness of the Lord so much that if I had a thousand tongues I wouldn’t be able to tell you all about it and I am not losing that for some petty sin and false pleasure. So, I had to close that door, forfeit watching the old seasons of GOT and I held on tight to my freedom in Christ. I am not going back to that bondage and having sin as my master again. NEVER!

So that’s my story. What’s yours and do you know your trigger? Cut it off!

If you don’t, find it out and cut it off!

The Bible says in Mark 9: 43 – 47 (NLT):

If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.

If your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It’s better to enter eternal life with only one foot than to be thrown into hell with two feet. And if your eye causes you to sin, gouge it out. It’s better to enter the Kingdom of God with only one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into hell.

Is it your friends, the company you keep, family, your computer, etc.? Cut it ALL off!

P.s. You must know that cutting off the physical trigger isn’t enough. We must truly repent of our sins i.e a change in our thinking and action, and accept the new life in Jesus. A complete renewing of our minds is required. Totally a topic for another day. But first, let’s turn to God to help us figure out those triggers and cut them off.

God bless.

  1. Thank you for sharing your honest experience. I have gone through similar. It is possible to abstain from an action, cold turkey, through our own effort. However, the lust still remains. It was only through the grace of Jesus Christ following my sincere repenting that he healed my heart and wrought changes in ME that went even deeper than outward actions. Temptation still flutters in briefly from time to time, but through my strength in Christ I say, “nope, not interested.” I choose my savior and eternal life over the false and meaningless promises of the devil. Before it seemed like a matter of time before I would fall off the wagon and it seemed impossible to clean up my thoughts. Now, although I know better than to get careless, through steadfast faith in my Lord victory is assured. Thank you again for your post and praise Jesus!

    1. You are so right. The lust still remain often times. The temptation will still come. I have heard it said that the presence of temptation does not negate deliverance or victory. Luke 4: 13 says, “And when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from him until an opportune time.” The devil will always come back especially when our guards are down. So we are encouraged to stay sober and alert. It will take our effort (fleeing from the devil and resist the temptation) plus the mighty help of the Holy Spirit. We definitely cannot do it by our own strength. We must flee and build ourselves up with the power and truth in God’s word like Jesus did. We must know what is written and believe that it is true. We have no obligation to our flesh anymore. Thank God for victory. Thanks so much for sharing your view. You couldn’t be more right. Glory!
