Jesus replied, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Let’s look at a fundamental truth today.
I love the story in John 3: 1 -14.
Nicodemus, a Pharisee, a ruler of Jews came to see Jesus at night. He said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.” (vs.1).
In response to this, Jesus said, “Yes, I came from God.”
No! That wasn’t Jesus’s reply. I lied.🙊 Well, that was what I expected his reply to be.
But, Jesus responded to Nicodemus and said, “Truly I tell you, unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (vs.3).
What?
Jesus’s reply to Nicodemus statement has no correlation at all. Nicodemus is talking about Jesus being a rabbi from God and Jesus is talking about being born again.
But Jesus was not here for the Nicodemus’s praises. Thou a Pharisee, Nicodemus was not born again, he was a carnal minded man and a dead living man. So Jesus was here to give him the truth and life. Jesus is the truth and he is a life-giving spirit. He has come to give us life more abundantly (John 10:10b).
Well, Nicodemus went with the flow and asked, “How can anyone be born when he is old?” Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time and be born?” (vs.4).
Honestly, at this point, I can relate with Nicodemus, “How on earth do I become born again, do I enter my mama’s tummy again?”
However, Jesus replied in vs 5, “Truly I tell you unless someone is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. Whatever is born of the flesh is flesh, and whatever is born of the Spirit is spirit. Do not be amazed that I told you that you must be born again. The wind blows where it pleases, and you hear its sound, but you don’t know where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
Jesus is saying, No, you don’t need to enter into mama’s womb again, mama is flesh. To be born of her again is simply to be flesh again. I need you to be born of the spirit. People who are born of the Spirit are submitted and led by the Spirit and people who are born of the flesh are hostile to God, they do not submit (Rom 8:7). So, Nicodemus, you need to be born of the Spirit. You need to be saved to enter into the kingdom of God.
Your salvation is deeply connected to your eternal life in heaven.
The first time you were born, you were born of flesh and your Spirit is dead. This is why you must become born of the Spirit so your spirit can be alive. A new birth is required of you to be made ALIVE in Christ.
Ephesians 2: 1 – 6 says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you previously lived according to the ways of this world, … But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace! He also raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavens in Christ Jesus.” What an Amazing Grace!
The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 15: 50 (AMP), “ Now I say this, believers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit nor be part of the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable (mortal) inherit the imperishable (immortal).”
Our flesh is perishable, it has a limited time and cannot inherit the kingdom of God which will last forever. So, to inherit the kingdom of God you must have something imperishable, which is your Spirit. Your spirit must be awakened and made alive.
How do I become saved?
How do I become born again in the spirit?
How do I become a spiritual living man?
Salvation and a life born again in Spirit comes by receiving Christ as your savior. You must believe in him and accept him as your savior. Realize that you are a big mess, you need help, you can’t save yourself and you need a savior.
John 14:6, Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
John 17: 2 -3 (TLB), “For you have given him authority over every man and woman in all the earth. He gives eternal life to each one you have given him. And this is the way to have eternal life—by knowing you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, the one you sent to earth!
John 1: 12, “ But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God.”
1 John 5:1, Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves the one born of him.
Romans 10:9-10: If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. One believes with the heart, resulting in righteousness, and one confesses with the mouth, resulting in salvation.
This is where the salvation prayer which we pray today came about. You have to believe it in your heart and confess it with your mouth. Why are many not saved? Because they are trying to understand it with their head. This is another topic for another day.
This birth of the Spirit of God is one that can never be broken.
Ephesians 1:13: “In him, you also were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and when you believed.”
Before you became saved, the Holy Spirit could not dwell in you because your spirit was dead. But the moment you received Jesus as your savior and believed in him. Your Spirit is made alive and the Holy Spirit now dwells in you. Through the Holy Spirit, you are signed, sealed and delivered as a child of Abba. The Holy Spirit becomes your teacher, he reminds you of Jesus’s teaching, he convicts you, guides you and seals you till the day of redemption.
So, brothers and sisters, your salvation is VERY important and fully connected to your eternal life. Everybody in this world must be born again to enter into the kingdom of heaven.
So as Jesus said to Nicodemus on that day, he is saying the same to you, “Truly I tell you, unless you are born again, you cannot see the kingdom of God.”
John 3:16: For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life.
God has done his part, now it’s your turn. Believe and accept Jesus Christ as your savior and step into eternal life.
A person born of the Spirit is a Spiritual being experiencing an earthly experience. We are not of this world. Our citizenship is in heaven. A kingdom that cannot be shaken.
